O intérprete do vilão Negan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, postou uma foto em seu perfil no Instagram com um extenso texto em homenagem ao ator Chandler Riggs após a morte de Carl no último episódio de The Walking Dead. Ele demonstrou bastante tristeza em dar adeus ao ator, principalmente por ser fã da relação entre os dois personagens nos quadrinhos, mas que não foi devidamente explorada na série. Carl foi mordido no fim da primeira metade da 8ª temporada, e sua morte foi confirmada no último domingo (25).
“Honestamente… Uma grande razão pela qual eu queria muito me juntar a esse bando de desajustados… Era porque eu era um fã do relacionamento Negan-Carl nos quadrinhos… Esse enredo era um dos meus favoritos, assim como um dos seus. Nos quadrinhos, a relação entre Negan e Carl é um vínculo completamente improvável durante o arco “Guerra Total”. Enquanto Chandler Riggs foi cortado da série de TV, nos quadrinhos de “The Walking Dead” seu personagem ainda está muito vivo e é tido como futuro protagonista das histórias — infelizmente, a série só contou o início desse protagonismo.
Enquanto Morgan disse que escolheu fazer a série por se interessar no arco dos dois personagens, Riggs explicou o motivo de o showrunner da série, Scott Gimple, matar seu personagem. Ele crê que a morte serve para preencher a lacuna que existe em Rick (Andrew Lincoln), sobre ele querer ou não querer matar Negan. “O jeito de Scott contar isso foi transformar Carl em uma figura humanitária, essa pessoa que consegue ver o bem nas outras pessoas, além de ver que nem todos são ruins e que podem mudar”, explicou o ator.
